This may sound weird, but I have relationships with certain songs. That’s right – my feelings about a song or album change over time.
For example, my relationship with Sufjan Stevens’ song, “I Walked,” evolved considerably over a few weeks. It went a little something like this:
First Listen: “What the hell is this synth pop garbage? It sounds like YAZ on a bad trip.”
Third Listen: “Hold on a second…this might not just be weird. It may be GOOD weird.”
Fifth Listen: “OMG I PSYCHOTICALLY LOVE THIS SONG AND MUST HEAR IT 10x A DAY!”
100th Listen: The insane love affair is over. But when the song comes on my ipod, I turn the volume all the way up and just let the song wash over me.
If you don’t know who Sufjan Stevens is, you really should. Not only is he a musical genius – his concept albums are pretty amazing. (He’s in the process of writing an album for each of the 50 states!)
Oh, and did I mention that when I saw him live a few months ago, he looked like this?
He’s a pretty interesting dude. And his shows include lasers and ironic dancing. What’s not to love? So, without further ado, I give you “I Walked.” Enjoy! (Lyrics here)
